What is 13 SEER?SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The current scale of 10 to 19.5 SEER is set and regulated by the US Department of Energy. On January 23, 2006, the minimum will increase from 10 to 13 SEER for all A/C Systems which represents a 30% increase over the current minimum standard that has been place for nearly a decade.
Who will this affect?
The 13 SEER minimum applies to everyone with an air conditioner. However it only applies to a new equipment manufactured on or after Jan 23, 2006. In other words, homeowners can continue to use their current system indefinitely, even if it operates below 13 SEER. However, if certain A/C parts or the entire unit needs to be replaced, they could unexpectedly be required to upgrade their whole system instead of just replacing a simple part.
